Demand for selected nursery plants sold in North Carolina (i.e., begonia, dianthus, geranium, impatiens, marigold, petunia, and vinca) was found to be affected more by prices than by income, demographic, and other variables. By using cross-sectional data, a modified AIDS model, incorporating demographic variables and quadratic income response, was estimated. Inverse Mills's ratios were also included in the model to correct for selectivity bias, resulting from zero purchases. Significant own-price elasticities ranged from -0.71 to -1.65, and income elasticities ranged from -0.78 to 0.41. |

Cardioleputin, a new cardioactive toxin, was purified from a stonefish venom using column chromatographies. The purified toxin was found to be an unstable protein that was susceptible to heat and freeze-thawing. This protein showed to have a molecular size of 46,000 daltons, and its amino acid composition was rich in serine and glycine, but low in basic amino acids. The crude venom induced a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate of rats right after administration. Both the blood pressure and heart rate returned to their original values as time elapsed, and thereafter continued to show a gradual decrease. In addition, crude venom actively affected the contractile response and suppressed the heart rate of guinea pig atria. The purified toxin caused... |

A review is given of the parasites (parasitoids) of the African cereal stem borers (including introduced species) belonging to the family Braconidae (Hymenoptera); 38 species belonging to 19 genera are keyed and treated. Three new species are described: Macrocentrus sesamivorus spec. nov. from Kenya, Somalia, and Zaïre (Macrocentrinae), Iphiaulax pilisoma spec. nov. from Senegal, and Amyosoma flavistigma spec. nov. from Australia (Braconinae). New synonyms are: Euglyptobracon Telenga, 1936, with Pseudovipio Szépligeti, 1896; Lorenzoa de Stefani-Perez, 1909, Kulczynskia Niezabitowski, 1910, and Chivinia Shestakov, 1932, with Bracon Fabricius, 1804; Euvipio Szépligeti, 1904, with Stenobracon Szépligeti, 1901; Glyptomorpha baetica var. mauretanica Szépligeti,... |

This paper uses income decomposition techniques to demonstrate the importance of livestock income in improving rural income distribution. It is based on three-year household panel data (1986 to 1989) from rural Pakistan. The paper first decomposes total income among five sources: agricultural, nonfarm, livestock, rental and transfer. This shows that livestock income is inequality-decreasing and that it makes the smallest contribution to overall inequality. The study then decomposes the sources of livestock inequality by type of animal. While livestock income from male animals has a negative impact on equity, livestock income from one female animal (local cow) has a positive effect. |

This paper examines the direct, first-rounds impact of two types of remittances—internal and external remittances—on income distribution and asset accumulation in rural Pakistan. Using income decomposition techniques on a three-year panel household data set, the paper finds that internal remittances have a positive effect on equity and that external remittances have a negative effect. The study also uses an asset-accumulation model to pinpoint the effect of remittances on five types of rural assets: irrigated land owned, rainfed land owned, livestock assets, agricultural capital, and nonfarm assets. The results show that remittances do have an effect on rural asset accumulation. While external remittances have a positive and significant effect on the... |
